Change the world

Third-year Marketing students from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (George Campus) have again rose to the occasion with their original advertising productions developed for the annual Advertising Showcase.

Believing that there should be a balance between theoretical and practical work, the Advertising Showcase was initiated by lecturer Adele Potgieter 8 years ago. It has since become an annual event on the George Campus calendar. The showcase presented students with an excellent opportunity to put their creative talents and knowledge in marketing and advertising gleaned during their studies into practice.

The students impressed an appreciative audience and panel of judges with a spectacular Advertising Showcase. The event took place at the George Campus’s main hall on 18th September 2013.

Two innovative “advertising agencies”, better known as Immediate! and Free Tree Media were challenged to develop their company’s corporate identity which included the development of letterheads and business cards, as well as an advertising campaign for Mount View Resort & Lifestyle Village in George. The “advertising agencies” had to create awareness for Mount View Resort & Lifestyle Village’s facilities and activities such as the Trattoria Figaro Pizza and Pasta Restaurant, Let’s Go Bowling, Inferno Hair Salon, Body Sense Beauty Salon and Wellness World through print advertisement, a billboard, a radio advertisement, Facebook page and a 90 seconds television advertisement.

This showcase is an example of the kind of practical assignments that prospective students who are interested in enrolling for the National Diploma: Marketing at NMMU George can expect to be exposed to says a proud Adele Potgieter. “Students not only learn the basics about advertising mediums. They also learn some valuable lessons on how to work in an environment with different opinions and viewpoints, stressful situations and strict deadlines.

After a few months of blood, sweat and tears the final product was presented to a panel of judges and the audience at large. The creativity and originality of the two teams were thoroughly tested. Both excelled in various applications, and were set apart by a very small margin as their final results were announced.

Free Tree Media achieved the highest overall score, but the adjudicators unanimously agreed that the values of excellence and diversity were well reflected in the work of both teams.
