Change the world

30/07/2012

It’s off to Turkey soon for three members of the Saasveld Forestry Association (SFA) who will be representing NMMU and their association at the International Forestry Students’ Symposium (IFSS) from 1 to 15 August.

Members of the International Forestry Student Association (IFSA) from across the globe participate in this two-week symposium, which is held annually in a different country.

This year the theme of the symposium is "Forest and Watershed". Each visiting delegation, including the students from NMMU George, will deliver a presentation and write a short paper on the topic.

The schedule includes a general assembly, a variety of presentations and field trips to various forestry and conservation areas; as well as learning about the culture of the host country. This opportunity enables NMMU’s forestry students to explore how forestry and forest practices are applied across the world, enabling them to develop the skills and insights to be globally competitive, yet locally relevant.

“This International symposium will allow us to share information with students from around the world and to learn more of the forestry industry on a global scale” says Sikhumbuzo Nxumalo, chairperson of the Saasveld Forestry Association (SFA).

Details on the symposium can be viewed at http://www.ifsa.net/newsdescription.php?ID=75
