The NMMU George Cricket Team, captained by Lyndon Volkwyn, won their semi-final of the SWD Cricket Promotion League on Saturday 2 March by 139 runs. This historic match, played against Knysna Cavaliers at Saasveld, has paved the way for the promotion of the NMMU George team to the SWD Cricket Board’s Premier League next season.

NMMU George won the toss and decided to bat first. The home team was bowled out in the 45th over for 155 runs with good performances by Kobus Scholtz - 49 runs from 47 balls (3 fours and 3 sixes);l Bradley Carolus - 25 runs from 108 balls; and Jason Olivier - 22 runs from 38 balls (1 four and 1 six).

The outfield was very slow and worth at least another 40 runs.

What followed next was beyond description as the two opening bowlers of NMMU George caused mayhem with the new ball when Knysna started their innings.

The first two balls bowled by Lyndon Volkwyn produced wickets. Gareth Dukes was not to be outdone and also claimed a wicket with the first ball that he bowled. After the 2nd over of the Knysna innings their scorecard read 3 wickets for no runs. A few overs later Dukes claimed a hat trick and Volkwyn cleaned up the tail. Lyndon returned match figures of 5 overs 6 wickets for 10 runs and Gareth Dukes 4 overs 4 wickets for 6 runs.

Both of them bowled with speed and good line and length that saw 7 of the wickets to fall clean bowled.

NMMU George won this historic match by 139 runs and will be promoted to the Premier League of the SWD Cricket board next season. They also qualify to play in the final of the Promotion League to be played at the headquarters of SWD Cricket, Oudtshoorn, in two weeks’ time.
