The achievements of the top performing NMMU George Campus BCom Accounting students of the 2014 Academic Year were acknowledged at the annual School of Accounting BCom Awards evening held on 20 February in partnership with SAICA (Southern African Institute of Chartered Accountants) and accounting firms in the Southern Cape region and further afield.
No less than 128 subject distinctions were attained by 36 BCom Accounting students in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of study respectively, while close to two dozen trophies were presented to students for attaining best performances in a variety of categories. These included top year students, top students in the Accounting for Chartered Accounting programme, top students in the General Accounting programme; as well as top students in the Accounting for Chartered Accounting programme’s major modules – Auditing, Accounting, Taxation, Management Accounting and Financial Management, also known as the SAICA Big Five Special Awards.
 
BCom Accounting for Chartered Accounting graduate, Francelise Maartens, who has opted for a career in teaching and has taken up a position at the Outeniqua High School from the beginning of the year, scooped all five SAICA “big five” special awards as well as another five trophies for top year student third year BCom Accounting, top Accounting student in the third year BCom Accounting programme and three Victor Ladorum awards for Auditing, Management Accounting and Taxation.
 
Current third year student and NMMU VC Scholarship recipient, Gizelle Potgieter, was acknowledged for eight subject distinctions. She also received trophies for top year student second year BCom Accounting, top Accounting student in the second year BCom Accounting programme and the award for the best student in Ethics and Corporate Governance.
 
Two other NMMU VC Scholarship recipients and current second year students, Moreeda Parker and Emile de Bruyn walked away with the joint award for top Accounting student in the first year BCom Accounting programme. Parker was also announced the top year student first year BCom Accounting, while Janneke Louw and Herman Vermeulen received the prizes for top year students (1st and 2nd year respectively) in the Extended BCom General Accounting programme.
 
The awards for Top Year Student, BCom General Accounting, were scooped by Lutho Matiwane, Ruth Gil and Jessica van Rensburg for their outstanding achievements in their 1st, 2nd and 3rd years of study respectively.
 
Congratulations to the 36 students who jointly account for the 128 module distinctions.  Their names will be captured on the Deloitte Roll of Honour: Francelise Maartens, Gizelle Potgieter, Anneke Smit, Ruth Gil, Angeline Thabethe, Nompumelelo Mtambo, Danelle van der Merwe, Emile de Bruyn, Moreeda Parker, Suzanne Smit, Jason Potgieter, Bianca Viviers, Anel Cloete, Sandisiwe Twala, Karl-Johann Ewert, Nombuyisele Nyembezi,  Mihle Zihle, Sinnikiwe Kobo, Lutho Matiwane, Tamryn Burisch, Jacques Coetzee, Balindi Hoho, Mpho Mongwaketsi, Jacques van Rensburg, Mdumiseni Nkosi, Yanga Tsewu, Herman Vermeulen, Luxolo Zim, Lelethu Ralarala, Janneke Louw, Christian Willemse, Brad-Gilbert Saaiman, Natalie Klemm, Allistine Arends, Dillon Plaatjies and Kaylin Saptouw.

The occasion was the School of Accounting’s annual awards event held at the NMMU George Campus recently.  Prof Prinsloo reiterated that NMMU’s BCom Accounting programmes are of a very high standard – a fact confirmed by the accreditation of the programmes by the SA Institute of Chartered Accountants, SAIPA, ACCA, IIA and CIMA.  He also pointed out that following the full SAICA monitoring visit that took place in 2014 (which included a thorough evaluation of the George programme offerings), the NMMU’s CA programme was described as “excellent”, and a rating of 1 was awarded to the programme (i.e. the highest rating the SAICA can award).
