04/05/2012

Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s top athlete in 20km Walk racing has been selected for the South African team that will be participating in the International Athletics Association Federation World Race Walking Cup.  Armond Nel will represent South Africa in Saransk, Russia on the 12 and 13 May 2012.

“This is wonderful news. We are sure he will do NMMU and South Africa proud”, says NMMU George Sport Manager, Hugo Loubser.

Armond Nel, a 2nd year Nature Conservation student at the NMMU George Campus has been training hard in George on his own and will join his team of five, and coach Carl Meyer next week in Johannesburg after the USSA Athletics Championships. It was at this annual event in 2011 that Armond had his breakthrough achievement when he won a silver medal in the 20km Walk. He aims to improve on this achievement and has set his sights on securing the gold medal in this event on Friday, 27th April in Johannesburg. Then it's off to Russia!

Armond currently holds a personal best of 01:27:41 for the 20km Walk Men Race and aims to improve this time, and raise the bar of competition to a new level.

The NMMU Madibaz and staff take pride in congratulating Armond on his outstanding performance to date and wish him every success in the IAAF World Race Walking!
