Thirteen staff members at Nelson Mandela University, George Campus were acknowledged for 5, 10, 15, 25 and 30 years’ service – 135 years in total – during the staff year-end event on 6 December. In addition to the long service awards, certificates were also presented to a number of support staff who had recently completed a variety of short learning programmes.  This is in line with the university’s endeavours to reward and encourage a culture of service excellence and continuous learning.

The Acting Campus Principal, Mr David Alexander, thanked staff for their endeavours to live up to the value system of the university’s namesake, Nelson Mandela, and especially for embracing the commitment to education as “the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.

Staff teams and individual staff members who had been innovative in visually depicting the theme of the year-end event – “Bring out the Madiba in you! – were also acknowledged and rewarded with a small item bearing the university’s logo.

Long service acknowledged… Natalie du Plessis (Admissions Office – 5 years), Ilona Joshua (Admin Support, Counselling Services – ten years), Antoinette Piet (Health Services – 5 years), David Alexander (Campus Principal, Act), Denise Kammies (Catering Services - 5 years), Lynette Williams (Business Systems Analyst) with 25 years’ service under the belt; Natasha Thorne (Financial Aid Office) and Dr Adele Potgieter (Lecturer), each with ten years’ service to their credit.

Martin Loubser, David Alexander, Sipho Makaleni and Clyde Booysen (Maintenance). Mr Sipho Makaleni, a staff member in the Horticulture division, was congratulated on successfully completing a computer skills training course. 

Congratulations colleague… Mr Sipho Makaleni, who had successfully completed a course in Basis Computer Skills, was warmly applauded and encouraged by fellow staff members from the Horticulture division.

Staff members who had dressed-up most innovatively in accordance with the theme of the staff event - “Bring out the Madiba in you! – included (f.l.t.r.) Victor Meyer, Dr Sam Webber, Muedanyi Ramantswana, Shann Kieswetter, Prof Jenny Fincham, Ilona Joshua, Antoinette Piet, Natalie du Plessis; and  Catering staff members, Julia January and Chantal Jacobs.

Line manager, Clyde Booysen, congratulated Maintenance staff member, Mlindeli Viti, on completing five years’ service with the university.

Artisan Songezo Tyeshani (left) was one of three members of the George Campus Maintenance Unit who had successfully completed a short learning programme – Management Skills for 21st Century Leaders. He was warmly congratulated by Clyde Booysen.

Marius O’Neill, another Maintenance team members with his certificate for the programme - Management Skills for 21st Century Leaders – which he had completed successfully. The third member of the team who had completed the programme, Isaac Bantam, was not present when the certificates were presented.
