Change the world

30/07/2012

Three Forestry students from NMMU’s George Campus at Saasveld (from left to right), Hannes van Zyl, Thandi Makoe and Sikhumbuzo Nxumalo, represented the campus at a recent two-day seminar organised by the Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (DAFF).

The seminar was titled “Youth in Action for Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation through Sustainable Forest Management” and looked at issues surrounding climate change and global warming.

As part of the first day’s programme Nxumalo and Makoe had the opportunity to give a presentation on the university’s George Campus at Saasveld, specifically covering the campus’ academic programmes in Forestry and Wood Technology; as well as the student  forestry organisations, SFA (Saasveld Forestry Association) and IFSA (International Forestry Students’ Association).

According to Nxumalo they were the only students who gave a presentation during the event which included high profile visitors from DAFF, Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the National Youth Development Agency.
