Change the world

10/06/2015

From the start of the 2016 academic year NMMU George Campus will further increase its focused programme offerings in Business and Economic Sciences, with the introduction of a one year Higher Certificate programme in Business Studies.

The decision to offer the programme at the NMMU George Campus is based on a need identified by the university to create more opportunities for school leavers who, because of limited academic and work experiences are not readily employable.

The aim of this entry-level NQF 5 qualification is two-fold – to widen access to selected diploma qualifications in the Faculty of Business and Economic Sciences; and to serve as an exit qualification that will prepare students for the challenges of the business world, equipping them with knowledge and skills to render them more employable.

The Higher Certificate in Business Studies will focus on the fundamental knowledge and skills gained in the fields of Accounting, Economics, Management and Entrepreneurship, Supply Chain Management, Marketing, Tourism and Personal Finance, together with computer, numeracy and communication skills.

In total 10 modules will have to be completed successfully to obtain the qualification, namely:Fundamentals of Business Management; Fundamentals of Marketing; Fundamentals of Supply Chain Management; Fundamentals of Accounting; Fundamentals of Personal Finance; Fundamentals of Tourism; Fundamentals of Business Communication; Numerical skills for Business; Principles of Economics and End-user Computing.

Students who successfully complete this Higher Certificate qualification and comply with all other admission requirements may proceed to the first year of any one of five diploma programmes offered by NMMU’s Faculty of Business & Economic Sciences – Management, Marketing, Tourism Management, Economics and Logistics.

Prospective students wishing to apply for the Higher Certificate in Business Studies will have to meet the following minimum admission requirements:

Minimum National Senior Certificate (NSC) requirements for Higher Certificate entry must be met

  • Admission Point Score of 22
  • English, Afrikaans or isiXhosa (Home Language or First Additional Language) on at least a level 3 (40-49%)
  • NSC achievement rating of at least 2 (30-39%) for Mathematics or 3 (40-49%) for Mathematical Literacy.
