It is the fourth consecutive year that the two-day tournament takes place at the university’s picturesque campus in George, featuring some the best student rugby sevens players in the country.
The tournament’s pool phase commences on Wednesday, 4 December with the knockout phase, followed by the all-important finals on Thursday, 5 December.
All of last year’s trophy winners, will be back to defend their titles. This includes last year’s Cup winners – University of Stellenbosch (Maties); last year’s winners of the Bowl competition – the local side, NMMU George Campus; – and last year’s winners of the Plate competition – North West University (Potchefstroom Campus); as well as winners of the Shield competition – University of Limpopo.
Supporters can look forward to exciting sevens rugby with some of the biggest draw cards who already confirmed their participation being three-times defending champions, Maties; this year’s Varsity Cup champions, University of Pretoria (Tukkies); this year’s Varsity Shield champions, Central University of Technology; as well as University of Cape Town (Ikeys); University of the Free State (Shimlas); North West University Potchefstroom (Pukke); University of Johannesburg (UJ) and of course the local side, NMMU George Campus.
The side from NMMU George Campus is expected to take full advantage of the fact that they are playing on their home field again and hope to build on last year’s fine performance.
All matches will be played at the university’s campus in George and are open to the public.
