Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and Glenwood House Private School have again partnered to present the 2nd annual NMMU Glenwood Science Expo (ScieX 2013) on 26 and 27 July 2013.  The inaugural event last year focused on innovations in the field of energy, while this year the focus shifts towards water, with the theme Water for All

It is open, free of charge, to members of the public and all schools in George and surroundings. Visitors and learners of all ages are welcome and encouraged to attend as the event offers “something for everyone”.

ScieX 2013Prof Andrew Leitch, Executive Dean of NMMU’s Faculty of Science says, “The Faculty of Science is thrilled to again be linking with Glenwood College for this important event, which this year focuses on such a relevant topic – Water for All”.

Etienne van Zyl, science teacher at Glenwood House, has also expressed his satisfaction at this “exciting science partnership in and for the community of George and environs”. “We believe that the programme compiled for this year will appeal to a broad audience, including families, learners of all ages, the scientific community and various industry sectors” said Van Zyl.

“With our focus on becoming a world-class knowledge catalyst for the green economy, and a more sustainable future, NMMU (George Campus) takes pride in joining forces with Glenwood House and our primary internal stakeholder, the NMMU Faculty of Science, in presenting this exciting development opportunity and innovative platform to promote the sciences amongst the youth, entrepreneurs, and society at large” says NMMU George Campus Principal, Prof Quinton Johnson.

The format of the expo includes presentations by academics, postgraduate students, learners and external experts; as well as innovative displays and demonstrations.   

While Glenwood House is the main expo venue for the event, the earth sciences film, Thin Ice, with discussions facilitated by NMMU Earth Stewardship Professor, Maarten de Wit will also be screened at the NMMU George Campus lecture theatre on the Friday evening, as part of the official opening of the event.  

Besides Prof de Wit, whose talk will focus on earth stewardship, touching on fracking in the Karoo and the perceived threat posed to groundwater supplies, other distinguished speakers scheduled to talk at the event include Case Rijsdijk of SA Institute of Physics, Dr Gletwyn Rubidge of NMMU’s Chemistry Department and Coos Bosma of NMMU’s Institute for Chemical Technology - InnoVenton; Prof Jurie van den Heever of US’s Paleontology Research Unit; Dr Mike Shand from Aurecon Engineering & Management Specialists; Dr Dirk Roux (NMMU Research Associate, Sanparks) and Prof Alison Lewis of UCT’s Chemical Engineering department.

Be sure to diarise this event scheduled for 26 July (09:00 – 16:00) and 27 July (09:00 – 14:00) at Glenwood House, just off Knysna Rd, Saasveld Rd intersection.
