ScieX 2012, which incorporates innovative science projects, some cutting-edge technology displays and talks by scientists, academics, learners and students offers something for everyone and is anticipated to have a broad appeal amongst the community of George and environs.
ScieX, Scheduled for 11 and 12 October 2012 at Glenwood House, will be launched under the theme – Sustainable Energy for All.
“Although the focus is on energy, it takes a broad view on the topic of sustainability, offering a platform for business and the community at large to display, promote and learn about the innovative technologies that are essential in the transformation to a more sustainable lifestyle”, says Etienne van Zyl, Glenwood House science teacher and co-ordinator of ScieX 2012 .
The scope and nature of ScieX 2012 complements the aims of NMMU’s Science Faculty to stimulate an interest in science, to help equip young people to address the challenges of tomorrow, and to invest in the development of innovative, cutting-edge technologies for a sustainable future. “With Glenwood House being one of NMMU’s top partner schools in the region and immediate neighbour of the university’s George Campus at Saasveld with its strong sustainability focus, the decision to work together came quite naturally”, says Prof Andrew Leitch, Executive Dean of NMMU’s Faculty of Science.
“Cultivating an interest in and appreciation of the sciences amongst the youth is critical to the sustainable development of our region and our country. With ScieX 2012 – which we hope will expand in the future – we would like to encourage our own students, and young people across the board to embrace science, to innovate, discover and demonstrate how it can be applied in practice to promote sustainable lifestyles”, says Glenwood House Headmaster, Mr Dennis Symes.
Glenwood House, situated off Knysna Road, will showcase the inaugural ScieX over two days - on 11 October (14:00 – 18:00) and 12 October 2012 (08:00 - 16:00). Members of the public, businesses, schools (primary and secondary) and other tertiary institutions are invited to attend this inclusive event. Entrance is free – so why not enrich your mind with a captivating array of technology displays and talks by experts?
Speakers include Dr Frederik Vorster and Profs Deon Raubenheimer and Raymond Auerbach of NMMU’s Faculty of Science and Etienne van Zyl of Glenwood House.
