Roxy Giles, a first year student at NMMU’s George Campus at Saasveld, won the ladies section of the annual USSA surfing competition at the iconic Victoria Bay, when she beat Nikita Kekana of University of Cape Town (UCT).

This was the fourth year in a row that NMMU George hosted the top surfing students of tertiary institutions from around South Africa.

A total of six teams, namely Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (PE), NMMU (George), Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT), University of Stellenbosch (Maties), UCT and Varsity College from Durban, took part in this year’s SA University Surfing Championship.

The five trophies on offer went to:

  • Jeandre Blignault (CPUT) – Individual winner: men’s category
  • UCT – Winner of the team competition: men’s category
  • Roxy Giles (NMMU George) – Individual winner: ladies’ category
  • UCT – Winner of the team competition: ladies’ category
  • UCT – Winner of the Institutional Trophy (men’s and ladies’ points combined)

Chris Dunt, the contest director, said in his report: “I commend all the surfers for the exemplary matter in which they conducted themselves throughout the event and congratulate, not only the individual and team winners, but all the surfers who participated by displaying a very high level of performance surfing, which was not only enjoyable to watch, but made the contest a pleasure to run’.
